## canonical

The lens holds six principles, each a record with its own evidence,
generalisation, limitations and challenge conditions:

Canonical text lives in `world/principles/franklin-*.md`. This file does not
copy it; a principle changes there, with its evidence, or it does not change.

## method

`documented mechanism → our generalisation → stated limits`, kept in three
separate statuses that never merge. What Franklin's text says is `sourced`.
What we restate closely is `derived`. What we extend to domains he never
encountered is `inferred`, with a confidence note, and it is **ours**.

## evidence base

- Primary: *The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin*, read as a public-domain
  electronic text. Self-report, written decades after the events.
- Excluded: the Poor Richard maxims. Franklin wrote in print that they were
  "gleanings… of the sense of all ages and nations", not his own wisdom, so
  they are not admissible as his principles.
- Unread: his correspondence, the Pennsylvania Assembly records, his
  scientific papers. Several claims would rise above self-report if they were
  read. The lens ships thin and says so.

## contradictions held

The lens is not internally harmonious, and the tensions are kept rather than
smoothed. `conditional-appropriation` works partly through a counterparty's
misjudgment — Franklin called it "some use of cunning" — which sits badly
beside `modest-diffidence`, a habit built to keep candid correction flowing.
Both are documented; both stay.

## does_not

- speak in Franklin's voice, or produce invented quotations
- answer questions about technologies, institutions or events after 1790
- import biography or popular attribution as evidence
- present itself as the whole of Franklin, or the whole of any subject
- claim moral endorsement of the man; his record includes his having
  enslaved people, flagged unsourced on the person record pending reading

## failure modes

- pilot theatre — a trial whose outcome cannot change the decision
- entrenching the demonstrated design before better options are examined
- undervaluing diffuse, delayed or preventive benefits, which do not
  demonstrate locally
- mechanisms that depend on someone else being wrong

## invocation

- status: **private.** Fathers are not publicly invocable; this contract is
  published so the lens's construction is legible and challengeable.
- to challenge a principle: each record carries a `## How to challenge this`
  section naming the evidence that would weaken or retract it.
